Pig Day

6 04 2012

As luck would have it I was in Davis the first weekend of March to experience Pig Day at the Davis Farmers’ Market.  There were balloons and banners, musicians, people dressed up like pigs,  and even baby pigs to pet .  And of course beautiful produce, baked goods, handmade goods and fun activities for the kids.

The market is held on Saturdays and Wednesday evenings under the pavilion located in the community park in Downtown Davis.  As with many other cities there is a growing (pun intended) concern that we support our local farmers and that our food is grown without the use of harsh and harmful chemicals.

So if you haven’t been to a farmers’ market lately, get on your computer, Google the markets in your area and give them a try.  I know I’m looking forward to ours returning this next week here in Vancouver.

Walking in Davis

5 04 2012

The end of February found me in Davis, California visiting my brother who was recuperating from hip replacement surgery. Davis is a quirky college town that is easy to get around whether you are walking, on a bike or in a car. It is actually known as “Bike City”. There are unique sculptures and hanging art in yards, on houses and scattered about town. There is a merry go round, a thriving farmer’s market (which will get its own post), prayer flags waving and blooms galore. So when my brother was napping and taking it easy I would put on my walking shoes, grab my camera and set out to enjoy some of the sights and happenings around town.

Tofino

12 02 2012

Now that it has been a month since my last post, so much for my resolution to blog on a more timely basis, I thought I might post an entry. The first week of November Jim and I and our dog, Fleece, headed over to the west coast of Vancouver Island to spend a few days at the Long Beach Lodge situated on Cox Bay a few miles from Tofino. We purposely went in November because we wanted to be there for some stormy rainy weather (and to celebrate our thirtieth anniversary). I got a little “snap happy” with my camera and took well over 300 pictures…here are a few.

Happy New Year…a little late.

13 01 2012

Wow, we are 13 days into the new year and I’m already behind. With each new year I feel compelled, mainly because everyone else does, to write down a few RESOLUTIONS. Timely blogging is on the list.  I did leave one or two unfinished drafts on “the tablet” from last year that I will finish and post in the near future. I ran into a little hiccup with my post about our trip to Tofino because of equipment change and my lack of knowledge in using Apple products.  All of the pictures from that trip are downloaded to my new Ipad (I really do love that little gadget) and I can’t figure out (haven’t taken the time to learn) how to insert photos into my blog. I use WordPress and again, haven’t really embraced all of the inner workings and don’t know how friendly it will be on the Ipad. So, I am writing this one from my trusty Dell netbook which, according to Kelsey, is all of the technology I need/can handle. Kids!

Oh well, back to the “R’s”. In no particular order here they are:

Clear the clutter

Be Creative

Practice Kindness

Meditate

Run/Walk daily

Try Yoga

Scrapbooks/photobooks

Blog

Plan and eat healthy meals

Stay in touch with friends

Think green

So, in short,  in clearing the clutter I might find some healthy recipes (in the cookbooks crammed in the cabinet) to plan our meals and I will  use up some of my art supplies which will allow me to be creative. Once well fed I’ll be ready to run and try yoga, which will allow me to meditate and give me fodder for the blog. Because me in a yoga class trying to bend and balance will be quite comical and I’ll have to share my experience with my friends.  In looking for pictures to post to the blog I can organize them and put them in digital files or put the old printed ones in actual books, again using some more of the clutter that I have kept over the years. I am normally a very kind person but I think some random acts of kindness never hurt and I can be randomly kind to the earth by picking up bits of trash I see when I’m out running or walking the dogs and I can say hi to the homeless people and can give away some of the fore-mentioned clutter to those in need.  Sounds like a plan.  I’ll document with pictures along the way so you can see how I’m doing.

Now, some photos from one of our random weekend walks…just because.

Plain and simple… I love the colors of fall.

We go out walking…rain or shine

25 10 2011

A month has passed since I started the draft for this post. This particular walk at the end of September was in the “shine”. A beautiful blue sky greeted Cork and me after a few days of gray.  Even the moon wanted to linger.

We set off from the house along Richards Street to George Wainborn park and it’s dancing waters fountain.

Then through the park, stopping along the way to admire the changing cone flowers, the bright black-eyed Susans and the other blooms.

I never get tired of looking back toward the city or out across False Creek and the yacht club marina and the row of permanent house boats on Granville Island along the seawall.

The early morning sun makes the water glisten.

We even see a “Pirate” boat, some Inukshuks, a view of David Lam Park and a yoga instructor filming  as we make our way around the seawall.

The moss covered rocks are exposed during the low tide as is the circle of rocks.

Cork was one happy dog to be out and about on such a pretty end of summer morning.

Since this walk there have been others and I have a new camera as well!
